Other Car Questions
How did the term suicide doors come about on Lincoln cars in the late 60’s and early 70’s? My grandparents had this type of car that the back doors opened in the other direction.
Fun question! Coach doors, or “Rear hinge doors” as they were called from the factory, we’re designed by engineers who didn’t want to hit their feet on the door getting out of the vehicle. I think there are 2 reasons for the slang term “suicide doors” that was used later to describe these doors, both relate to safety. First, if you were getting out of the vehicle and a car came at you, you had no protection, and by the nature of the door would be positioned in a way more likely to get hurt. Second, if you were inside the vehicle and the door flew open (which happened more often back then) instinctively reaching for it would pull the passenger out of the car. Remember that seat belts were rarely used back then.

How many keys do you have on your key ring?
This question is good for everyone to consider – the weight of a heavy ring with several keys on it wears out the small parts in your ignition and can cause the type of issues that Terry is asking about here.
